Story Synopsis

At the funeral of a woman who has accidentally fallen to her death, three housewives become acquainted with each other. Dai Xiumei is an ex-policewoman who has a penchant for serving the neighbourhood. Yan Feixue is a typical "auntie". Qiu Shuangxi is part-timing in cosmetics sales. The trio finds the woman's death suspicious and decides to investigate further. What was initially classified by the police as death by misadventure turns out to be a case of manslaughter, as revealed by their investigations. The killer turns out to be the deceased's husband.

Xiumei then decides to start a private investigative (PI) agency and ropes Feixue in to help her.

The beer-lady has suspected her lover, the coffee-boy, of two-timing her. Xiumei mistakes that coffee-boy is having homosexual relations with his tenant, Gao Xiang, but later realises that the former is merely addicted to gambling. Gao Xiang subsequently moves into Feixue's home. Feixue has fantasies about the handsome man and upon realising that Gao Xiang is an IT expert who will come in handy in their investigative work, she strongly recommends him to Xiumei. Shuangxi has prior misunderstandings with Gao Xiang and does not have a good impression of him.

Shuangxi is implicated in a maid abuse case, but with Xiumei and Feixue's help, manages to clear her name. This is when Shuangxi decides to use her make-up skills to help the PI agency. As it turns out, the first case the girls manage to solve involves Xiumei's husband. Xiumei had suspected her husband, Guo Renjie (a policeman), of having an extra-marital affair, but realises that she had been mistaken all along. Years back, Renjie had let a suspect off (out of compassion) but this act resulted in the death of his colleague. A woman, claiming to be his dead colleague's daughter, approaches Renjie. Filled with guilt, Renjie wants to give her his entire pension as compensation. Fortunately, Xiumei finds out in time that the woman had assumed a false identity, and prevents Renjie from being cheated.

A wealthy businessman approaches the agency to help search for his long-lost son. Feixue realises that the "long-lost son" mentioned is, in fact, her husband, Chen Weizhong. The truth is, Weizhong is not his father Facai's biological son. Facai and the businessman were suitors of Weizhong's mother and Facai had schemed to separate the couple. Weizhong had not been able to forgive the businessman as his mother had died broken-hearted. Feixue and the team clear the misunderstanding and Weizhong acknowledges his biological father before the latter breathes his last. Facai leaves in dejection. Knowing that Weizhong still cares for Facai, Feixue brings the latter home. The family is thus reunited.

Gao Xiang's ex-girlfriend, visibly pregnant, comes by. She wants Gao Xiang to help search for her missing boyfriend but by some twist of fate, Gao Xiang ends up being the subject of her family's investigations. Thinking that Gao Xiang had impregnated his ex-girlfriend and abandoned her, Shuangxi loathes him more. As it turns out, it was a case of love-turned-hatred involving his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend and her boyfriend's wife. Gao Xiang and his team uncover the truth and Shuangxi's impression of Gao Xiang improves.

Shuangxi and Gao Xiang show much chemistry when they co-operate and they would occasionally pretend to be lovers when out investigating. Their behaviour seems to indicate that there is something going on between them. Shuangxi starts to develop some feelings towards Gao Xiang and avoids him. At this point, Gao Xiang discovers that Shuangxi's husband, Zhang Yongjun, is involved with another woman. Out of concern, he tells her about it, but Shuangxi misunderstands and sees this as an attempt to cause a rift in her marriage.

Xiumei's daughter, Jiaxin, went missing before when she was little. This has resulted in Xiumei being overprotective of her daughter. Xiumei realises that Jiaxin is dating Shuangxi's son, Tianyang, and immediately tries to put a stop to the relationship. Shuangxi, on the other hand, adopts a more liberal stand. This causes much unhappiness between the two friends.

Upon learning that Yongjun has an extra-marital affair, Xiumei and Feixue decided to uncover the truth. Yongjun counters their moves and succeeds in making Shuangxi remorseful, thus trusting him more. Shuangxi's friendships with her friends worsen as a result. Because of her work at the agency, Feixue has neglected her sons. Weizhong is unhappy about this and wants her to concentrate on her duty as a home-maker. The agency is now faced with the possibility of closure.

At this time, Yongjun's mistress is murdered and both Shuangxi and Yongjun become the prime suspects. It suddenly dawns on Shuangxi that Yongjun had betrayed her. Though devastated, Shuangxi works with the rest to uncover the truth. They manage to assist the police in tracking the real culprit down. The mistress had been killed by her boyfriend. The misunderstanding between the friends is cleared up finally. Yongjun is convicted of embezzlement and sent to jail. He asks Shuangxi for her forgiveness. Tianyang advises his mum to accept Gao Xiang. Shuangxi is confused, but Gao Xiang is content to just stay by her side.

"Auntie PI Agency" reopens for business and the trio are ready to solve cases of neighbourly issues again.
